Welcome to FasTuts Photoshop!
As a professional designer you end up creating Photoshop documents you use as makeshift templates for repetitive tasks. I’m going to show you an awesome way to turn a normal Photoshop document into an actual Photoshop Template FILE, so you’ll never have to worry about accidentally overwriting your templates ever again.
2 quick ways: if you have a clean template like this thumbnail, all you need to do is change the file extension from Photoshop Document – .PSD, to Photoshop Document TEMPLATE – .PSDT. rename the file, and click yes to the warning about the file extension. Now when you open the PSDT file, it will open the file as “Untitled Doc 1” instead of the file name. Now when you save, you’ll be saving the duplicated document for the first time, and you’ll be prompted to choose a name and destination for the new file.
Now you’ll never have to deal with your template being overwritten like this other thumbnail shitshow. The 2nd way to create a PSDT is from inside Photoshop. You get your template to where you want it, and then when you save, choose PSD, but then type a t at the end.
Now you have real Photoshop Templates, and you can save you from yourself or your coworkers from goofin’ your whole shiz.
They are incredibly simple to revert, all you have to do is edit the file extension back to .PSD, and you can open it like normal.
I’ve been using Photoshop for over a decade, and I still find amazing nuggets like this all the time. Now I can incorporate this into my design workflow and be even more efficient. Things like this is why I started FasTuts. And the only thing that gets me excited more than personal growth is then being able to share it with people who get just as pumped up and giddy as me about this kinda geeky shit.
